Alan and Darlene's story may sound like a typical opposites attract story, but these are not your typical people. They met at a barbeque at a mutual friend's house in Salinas prior to Alan moving back to California and hit it off.
Living in Southern California, Alan took every opportunity to visit Darlene in Salinas to continue their friendship, such as convincing his family to go up to the Bay Area. This time of long-distance friendship allowed them to get to know each other in a deeper way, eventually leading to a strongly-rooted romantic relationship.
Eventually, Alan was able to move up to Salinas to be with her, and their love flourished. Alan is very outgoing, bubbly, and talkative (as anyone who has ever had a conversation with him immediately knows), whereas Darlene is quieter, thoughtful and reserved. But the chemistry worked, and they wanted the same things out of their relationship. Alan is a big movie buff, and Darlene hadn't seen mavy movies, allowing him to share his love of movies with her.
Darlene got accepted at Cal Poly, and Alan followed her to San Luis Obispo as their relationship deepened. Darlene, who grew up Christian, got deeper and deeper in her relationship with God and felt called to find a good church home. Alan, who didn't grow up going to church, knew that it was important to Darlene and important for their relationship. They found a great church home at Mercy Church. Eventually, he gave his life to Jesus and began a relationship with God.
Their relationship began on the beaches of Monterey, so when it came time to propose, he took her to Seaventure in Pismo Beach on her birthday. He paid the band to play their song, Dream A Little Dream, and popped the question.
